Why build a pond?

There are a number of good reasons to consider installing a pond in your garden. After all water is the most important ingredient of life – by neglecting it we are missing out on a vital element of nature.

On a practical level ponds look good and provide your garden with a completely different dimension. A pond’s reflective quality helps to bring light into a garden while they also introduce the notion of movement and energy. Building a new pond is an exciting prospect as your project can be highly diverse. If you are going for a traditional look you may want to consider a formal rectangular pond with an ornate fountain centre-piece. At the other end of the scale could be something highly contemporary such as a stainless steel waterfall spillway

A further bonus is that building a pond is probably the most important wildlife feature that you can introduce. It will attract a host of different insects and animals that would not visit otherwise. The numbers of much of this wildlife is in sharp decline so you will be doing your bit to see that they survive for further generations to enjoy.

A pond will open up a whole new range of plants and flowers to your garden. From startling giant water lilies to marginals and bog plants you will be able to bring a whole new look to your garden. Pond plants require special pond planting equipment to thrive.

It could be argued that ponds actually reduce garden maintenance. I know from experience the satisfaction from having to only mow one lawn! Plus a pond will only have to be ‘topped up’ with water once in a while and water butts are perfect for this job.

Finally, perhaps the sheer relaxing nature of a pond is its biggest reward. It may require a bit of hard work to install but once it’s in you will feel great satisfaction in the knowledge that “I did that”. A pond is something that will develop over time and bring years of happiness
