EPDM Pond Liners

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber with properties very similar to butyl rubber pond liners. Historically butyl rubber pond liners have always been seen as ‘top of the tree’ in terms of desireability for pond builders in theUK. EPDM is a more modern fabric that takes all of the best elements of butyl pond liners onto a new level. It is black and textured just like butyl and when you put two samples together it is practically impossible to see or feel any difference.

EPDM Pond Liner Options

Our EPDM pond liners are 0.75mm thick. This is the standard thickness – you can buy thicker pond liners but this makes the weight a real issue for what is only a marginal gain in strength. Plus thicker pond liners can leave bigger pleats when it is folded back on itself when installing into the corners of complex shapes. These pleats or ruches can retain water and get smelly and discoloured over time.EPDM pond liners are sold under many different brnad names such as Geenseal or Epalyn but it is basically all the same. There is also an EPDM called Firestone which is thicker and has a chalky surface – this pond liner is not as popular due to the problems with thicker pond liners touched on before.

EPDM Pond Liners Performance

An EPDM pond liner will provide a lifetime of duty. If considering a rubber pond liner then we would recommend EPDM over the rarer butyl due to the cost saving it provides the customer. There is no drop off on quality so please take this information should an installer or landscaper insist that a butyl pondliner is used.

It should be noted that the external appearance of EPDM pond liners will change over time. After a year in position it will have 'aged' significantly. Generally we think this is a postive thing as it will blend more into its surroundings.

As with all of our rubber pond liners you can rest assured that EPDM pond liners are easy to repair. We sell cold glue tape and pond liner repair kits that can easily sort out and rips, punctures or leaks that may occur.
